Why should I renew my Scrum Alliance certification?
Scrum Alliance requires certification holders to earn Scrum SEU credits (Scrum Education Units) to retain their certifications in good standing. To retain your Scrum Alliance certification in good standing, you must earn required Scrum SEU hours every two years, submit to Scrum Alliance, and renew your Scrum Alliance certification.
What is Scrum Alliance SEU?
SEU is the abbreviation for Scrum Education Unit. Scrum Alliance requires certification holders to earn SEU credits to keep their certification in good standing. Typically, 1 SEU is gained by 1 hour of professional activity, attending an event, or online course.
When should I start submitting Scrum Alliance SEU to renew my Scrum certification?
Earning Scrum SEU hours requires a significant amount of time. Scrum Alliance expects you to earn the required SEU hours over the given two-year period. If you leave to the end, you may have problems in submitting SEU credits and that might risk your certification status.
What are the Scrum Alliance SEU Categories?
Scrum Alliance requires certification holders to earn Scrum SEU credits in certain fields and categories. There are four categories. These are Events, Learning, Volunteering and Others
- Events: Events like Scrum Alliance Global Gatherings, Scrum Alliance Regional Gatherings, and Non-Scrum Alliance-Sponsored Events, as well as in User Groups events and activities. Presenting, coaching, and attending sessions all count as SEU-eligible activities.
- Learning: Allowable SEUs in this category include working with Scrum Alliance CSTs, CECs, CTCs, and REPs as well as through various independent learning activities, such as: preparing presentations; authoring relevant books, articles, or blogs; watching a training video/webinar; reading one or two books in depth.
- Volunteering: SEUs may be earned by providing non-compensated professional Scrum services.
- Other: SEUs may be earned through a variety of other learning activities as Scrum Alliance acknowledges that not all learning fits neatly into the categories above.
What are the Scrum Alliance SEU Requirements?
Scrum Alliance requires different number of Scrum SEU credits for different level of certifications.
If you have a Leadership level (CAL-E, CAL-O, CAL-T) certification, you must earn 10 Scrum SEU credits every two years.
If you have a Foundational level (CSM®, CSPO®, CSD®) certification, you must earn 20 SEU credits every two years.
If you have an Advanced level (A-CSM®, A-CSPO®) certification, you must earn 30 SEU credits every two years.
If you have a Professional level (CSP®-SM, CSP®-PO, CSP®, CAL) certification, you must earn 40 SEU credits every two years.
If you are holding more than one Scrum Alliance certification, you will need to submit the full amount of required SEUs for your highest-level certification, but you will only be required to submit half the amount of required SEUs for each certification in a different track thereafter.
For instance, if you are holding A-CSM certification (requires 30 SEUs) and CSPO certification (requires 20 SEUs), you need to submit 40 SEUs in total (30 for A-CSM and 10 for the CSPO, half of the required SEUs).
There are no limits or caps for earning SEU credits from a certain category.
