Why should I renew my PMP certification?
PMI requires certification holders to earn PDUs (Professional Development Units) to retain their certifications in good standing. For PMP certification, the requirement is earning 60 PDUs every three years. To retain your PMP certification in good standing, you must earn 60 PDUs every three years, submit to PMI, and renew your PMP certification.
What is PDU?
PDU is the abbreviation for Professional Development Unit. PMI requires certification holders to earn PDUs to keep their certification in good standing. Typically, 1 PDU is gained by 1 hour of professional activity, attending an event, or online course.
When should I start submitting PMP PDU to renew my PMP certification?
Earning PDU hours requires a significant amount of time. PMI expects you to earn the required PDU hours over the given three-year period. If you leave to the end, you may have problems in submitting PDUs and that might risk your certification status.
What are the PMI Talent Triangle and PDU Categories?
PMI requires certification holders to earn PDUs in certain fields and categories. There are three categories in the PMI talent triangle. These are Ways of Working, Power Skills, and Business Acumen.
- Ways of Working: Whether it’s predictive, agile, design thinking, or new practices still to be developed, it's clear that there is more than one way that work gets done today. That’s why PMI encourages professionals to master as many ways of working as they can - so they can apply the right technique at the right time, delivering winning results.
- Power Skills: These interpersonal skills include collaborative leadership, communication, an innovative mindset, for-purpose orientation, and empathy. Ensuring teams have these skills allows them to maintain influence with a variety of stakeholders - a critical component for making change.
- Business Acumen: Professionals with business acumen understand the macro and micro influences in their organization and industry and have function-specific or domain-specific knowledge to make good decisions. Professionals at all levels need to be able to cultivate effective decision-making and understand how their projects align with the big picture of broader organizational strategy and global trends.
What are the PMP PDU Requirements?
PMP PDU requirement for certification holders is to collect 60 PDUs through a maximum of 25 Giving Back PDUs and a minimum of 35 Education PDUs. However, there is no cap for education PDUs. You can earn all 60 PDUs in the education category.
The 35 Education PDUs also have another limitation of reporting at least 8 Ways of Working project management PDUs as well as a limitation of reporting at least 8 Business Acumen PDUs and also a limitation of reporting at least 8 Power Skills PDUs. At the same time, reporting a maximum of 8 PDUs for working as a professional / practitioner of the giving back PDU category.
If you have a PMP®, PgMP®, PfMP®, PMI-PBA®, you must earn 60 PDUs in a three-year cycle.
There is a further requirement of these 60 PDUs as well.
You must earn at least 35 Education PDUs and you can earn at most 25 Giving Back PDUs.
As a certification holder you must earn a minimum number of PDUs in each of the skill areas of the PMI Talent Triangle® — Ways of Working, Power Skills, and Business Acumen. There is no limit on the number of Education PDUs that you can earn — meaning that you can earn all 60 PDUs in Education if you choose.
While earning PDUs from Education category, you must earn at least 4 PDUs from each of the PMI Talent Triangle categories: Ways of Working, Power Skills and Business Acumen.
Sharing knowledge and actively applying your skills is an important way to contribute to the profession, while also enriching your own professional skills. That’s why you have the option to earn up to 25 PDUs for your activities in this area. There is a maximum 8 PDUs limit for "work as practitioner" category here. You cannot submit more than 8 PDUs under "work as practitioner" category.
If you have a PMI-ACP®, PMI-RMP®, PMI-SP®, you must earn 30 PDUs in a three-year cycle.
There is a further requirement of these 30 PDUs as well. You must earn at least 18 Education PDUs and you can earn at most 12 Giving Back PDUs.
As a certification holder you must earn a minimum number of PDUs in each of the skill areas of the PMI Talent Triangle® — Ways of Working, Power Skills, and Business Acumen. There is no limit on the number of Education PDUs that you can earn — meaning that you can earn all 30 PDUs in Education if you choose.

If you have a CAPM®, you must earn 15 PDUs in a three-year cycle.

What are the ways to earn PMP PDU Hours?
There are two main categories to earn PDUs: Education and Giving Back. The education category includes courses or training, organizations, reading, and informal learning.
The Giving Back category includes working as a professional or practitioner, creating content, giving presentations, sharing knowledge, and volunteering.
How can I submit my earned PMP PDUs?
You should have a PMI profile on the PMI website pmi.org. You can log on to your profile, navigate to your credentials, and submit your earned PDUs.
Upon submitting your PDUs, PMI will review your submission. After review, PDUs are approved and shown on your profile.
What should I do after I complete 60 PMP PDU Hours?
After you complete 60 PDUs in your CCRS cycle, you must apply for PMP renewal on your PMI profile page. Just fill out the application form to abide by the PMI code of ethics during the PMP renewal process.
You’ll then be directed to a secure payment page to pay your PMP renewal fee to PMI.
How much does PMP certification renewal cost?
PMI members pay 60 USD, while non-members pay 150 USD to renew their PMP certification after completing their required 60 PMP PDUs.

Can I earn my PMP PDU hour needs for free?
There are free courses or free events (webinars, conferences, etc.) that you can attend and gain PMP PDUs. However, completing all 60 PMP PDUs for FREE will be tough, especially if you are a working professional.
